Latin American and Caribbean Studies at UGA

THE UNDERGRADUATE MAJOR IN LATIN AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN STUDIES 2006

for a printer friendly version click here

The major in Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS) will provide UGA students with a scholastically sound understanding of the languages, societies, and cultures of Latin America and the Caribbean.   LACS majors will be required to show high-level proficiency in one of the major languages of the region and have an introduction to one other regional language.   We anticipate that many students will complete double majors (e.g. LACS and International Affairs, LACS and International Business, LACS and History, LACS and Spanish/Portuguese).   Students in the professional schools who wish to gain competence in Latin America, but find it difficult to complete the full set of required courses for the major will be encouraged to select LACS as a minor or enter our current Certificate Program in Latin America and Caribbean Studies.

Students are encouraged to complement formal course work at UGA with a semester study abroad experience in accredited Latin American colleges or universities or in semester-long UGA-sponsored study abroad programs.

All LACS majors must fulfill the UGA core curriculum requirements (Areas A, B, C, D, and E, 42 hours) as found in the UGA Bulletin and website:   http://bulletin.uga.edu
